For most Green Leylandii hedging projects, we recommend approximately 1–2 trees per metre, depending on how quickly you wish to create a dense, continuous hedge.
For a more economical planting scheme, use approximately 1 tree per metre and allow additional time for the plants to knit together. For quicker coverage and greater initial density, approximately 2 trees per metre can be planted.
Depending on your hedge requirements, plants can be arranged in a single line, staggered line or double line. A single row is ideal for standard boundary hedging, while staggered or double-row planting can be used where a thicker, more substantial screen is required.
Prepare the planting area by removing weeds and loosening compacted soil. Dig holes wide enough to comfortably accommodate each root ball and plant at approximately the same depth as the trees are growing in their pots.
Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue watering regularly throughout the first growing season, particularly during warm, dry or windy weather. Larger evergreen plants require consistent moisture while their root systems establish.
Apply mulch around the planting area to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Once established, trim regularly to encourage dense, bushy growth and maintain your preferred hedge height and width.
Avoid cutting deeply into old brown wood when trimming, as Leylandii may not readily regenerate from bare older growth.
