Quickthorn (Crataegus monogyna) – The Classic British Hedging Tree

Hawthorn, also known as Quickthorn, is one of the UK’s best-loved native species and the traditional choice for natural, stock-proof hedging. In spring, it bursts into clouds of white blossom that attract bees and pollinators, followed by clusters of bright red berries (haws) in autumn that provide vital food for birds and wildlife.

Tough and tolerant, it thrives in almost any soil, including chalk and clay, and is highly resistant to wind, making it perfect for exposed sites.

Planting & Care Guide (Bare Root Trees)

Your trees are delivered root-wrapped in moist compost, ensuring they arrive nursery-fresh and ready to plant. If you can’t plant immediately, they’ll stay fresh for several days or even weeks when kept cool and shaded.

  1. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for 1–2 hours before planting.

  2. Dig a trench or holes deep and wide enough to comfortably spread the roots.

  3. Space plants approximately 1ft apart (or staggered double rows for a denser hedge).

  4. Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly.

  5. Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  6. Keep well-watered through the first growing season until fully established.

With proper care, your Quickthorn hedging will quickly knit together into a dense, thorny, wildlife-rich boundary that offers privacy, shelter, and natural charm all year round.
